CORNERSTONE PHASE I
|

| The Vicar Writes: |
In October 2004 we launched ‘Cornerstone' – an exciting plan to redevelop the church to enable us to continue to serve the wider community and to maintain our heritage. Although the process has taken longer than we would have wished, and we have met unexpected challenges, a great deal has been achieved in the last three years. |
We have raised funds to pay for the initial feasibility studies, we've carried out an archeological investigation of the site and we have worked with all the necessary groups to proceed to planning permission. During this time we were made aware of work that urgently needs to be done to the gallery, roof and tower to maintain the fabric of the building and enable us to continue to use all our space to full capacity. |
| This Summer you will see all this preparatory work bear fruit as CORNERSTONE PHASE 1 begins. This includes the work to maintain our heritage – to strengthen the gallery beams, to renew the roof and to repair and renovate the tower. The scaffolding around the church will alert everyone to what is going on and we hope very much to involve the town in supporting this work and we will be fund-raising very actively. But the PCC and I are aware that we will have to fund much of this work ourselves from our reserves. |
| The Harvest Festival weekend will be a focus of prayer and thanksgiving for all God's gifts to us and the PCC and I will be inviting church members to make a special gift offering that weekend. You can read more about this in this magazine, please do put the date in your diary now. The harvest weekend will include lots of opportunities to find out more about the renovation work, about what we are doing and why it is necessary. |
We are also actively preparing for CORNERSTONE PHASE 2 , to enable better access and community use for our building. This include a new ‘lantern' entrance structure – incorporating a lift - to be built on the corner of the church by the restaurant entrance. We are currently drawing up detailed plans in order to apply for planning permission this Autumn and to put in funding applications to grant awarding bodies such as Heritage Lottery and English Heritage. |
| This is a very big and visible project that demonstrates the commitment of the congregation of this generation to the long-term future of our church. Please do pray for your PCC, the building steering group and our architect and all involved with decision making, please get involved to support this work and please tell your friends! |
